August 27 was Freshman Spirit Day, but that didn't stop important work from happening in the classroom. In Mrs. Dabdoub’s Biology I class, students were busy experimenting. Students drew different shapes with a wide variety of pens and watched to see what the termites would do. At first, they predicted the termites were responding to the shape or ink color. Instead, they discovered that the termites followed certain paths because a compound found in some inks mimics their natural tracking pheromone. The lab also taught an important lesson about the scientific process: disproving a hypothesis can be just as valuable as supporting one. Sometimes the unexpected result is where the real learning happens.
