Students in Introduction to Engineering designed and built biomedical prototypes to set a severe bone fracture in a leg. They collaborated in small groups, tasked with creating an innovative design using screws, rubber bands, popsicle sticks, etc. The “broken femur,” a cardboard tube-like structure wrapped in foam, was examined at the end by applying weight, feeling for abnormalities, and accessing whether or not a large scar would result.
