CLC Volunteers Help Create Sustainable Mardi Gras Throws with Grounds Krewe

Members of MCA’s Christian Life Community (CLC) volunteered with Grounds Krewe, a New Orleans nonprofit focused on reducing waste at local events, especially during Mardi Gras. The organization works to replace traditional plastic beads with useful, eco-friendly throws that are designed to be enjoyed, not discarded.

Grounds Krewe partners with local krewes to create sustainable throws, such as food items like jambalaya mix, red beans, gumbo roux, and grits; wellness products like hand scrub and glitter body gel; and other longer-lasting items such as colored pencils and seed packets. By offering practical and earth-friendly alternatives, they help keep plastic bead waste off the parade route and encourage more sustainable throwing practices.

During their service session, CLC students helped assemble these sustainable throws for the Krewe of Iris. Through this work, they gained a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship while putting their faith into action in a meaningful, hands-on way.
