Inspired by their study of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” in English IV AP Literature and Composition, students created their own literary creatures. Working individually or in groups, they designed monsters using body parts symbolizing literary elements such as setting, plot development, and themes — blended with their personal traits and interests. Each creature included at least one component made from recycled or upcycled materials, with many students repurposing items like old toys or objects from home.
In addition to crafting their creatures, students wrote a scientist’s journal documenting their creative process. The journal included a letter to their creation and reflections on Catholic social teachings, focusing on caring for God’s creation and respecting the dignity of the human person. The project showcased their creativity and engagement with the novel’s key questions and themes.
