MOUNT CARMEL ACADEMY 2019 COMMENCEMENT

Ms. Beth Ann Simno, Principal, conferred diplomas on two hundred seventeen young women who were graduated from Mount Carmel Academy in commencement ceremonies at the Pontchartrain Center, Kenner, LA, on the afternoon of Monday, May 20, 2019. The Class of 2019 earned $26 million in scholarships and awards and was accepted into 89 colleges and universities.

Sister Camille Anne Campbell, O. Carm., President, presented the valedictory medals to Jordan R. Berry, daughter of Richard and Stacey Berry; Shelby L. Estess, daughter of John and Lori Estess; Madeline G. Flores, daughter of Louis and Trudy Flores; Kaitlyn M. Freese, daughter of Brian Freese and Kelly Fulham; Mary Caroline Gillen, daughter of Greg and Deborah Gillen; Sophia A. Happoldt, daughter of Dan and Lisa Happoldt; Elizabeth G. Holzman, daughter of Robert and Wendy Holzman; Ashleigh E. Lark, daughter of William and Stacey Lark; Meredith E. Noonan, daughter of Keith and Michele Noonan; Sara L. Saak; daughter of Robert and Shelly Saak; and Abby N. Samaha; daughter of Mark and Laurie Samaha. Sister Camille Anne also presented the salutatory medal to Anna B. Trahan, daughter of David Trahan and Sandra Trahan.

Miss Jordan Berry will major in engineering and play basketball at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS. She received the LAISHF Scholar-Athlete Scholarship, American Italian Renaissance Foundation, New Orleans, LA; David F. Miss Shelby Estess will study chemistry at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA, from which she received the Academic Scholars Resident Award and President's Student Aid Program. She also received the UA Scholar Scholarship, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL; and the Academic Merit, Academic Merit Non-Resident, and STEM Major Non-Resident Scholarships, University of Mississippi, University, MS.

Miss Madeline Flores will study chemistry at St. Edward’s University, Austin, TX from which she received President's Excellence and Edwardian Scholarships. She also received the Vice President's Scholarship and Catholic High School Award, Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO; and the Catholic Youth Leadership Award, St. Matthew the Apostle Knights of Columbus Council, River Ridge, LA.

Miss Kaitlyn Freese, will major in pre-nursing at Louisiana State University Honors College, Baton Rouge, LA from which she received the Academic Scholars Resident Award and President's Student Aid Program. Miss Caroline Gillen will study chemical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN from which she received the Campus Employment Scholarship. Miss Sophia Happoldt, a National Merit Commended student, will major in business and economics at Fordham University, Bronx, NY from which she received the Fordham Loyola Scholarship and Tuition Award. She also received the Academic Scholars Resident Award and President's Student Aid Program, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; Dean's Scholarship, Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA; and the President's Scholarship, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL.

Miss Elizabeth Holzman will study molecular and cellular biology and play volleyball at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL from which she received the Big Ten Athletic Cost of Attendance Grant.

Miss Ashleigh Lark will study sports management at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Lafayette, LA from which she received Academic and Partial Housing Scholarships. She also received the Dean's Scholarship, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX; and Academic Merit and Academic Merit Non-Resident Scholarships, University of Mississippi, University, MS.

Miss Meredith Noonan, a National Merit Commended student, will major in psychology at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. from which she received the Presidential Academic Scholarship. She also received Academic Scholarship, Baylor University, Waco, TX; Emory Opportunity Award, Emory University, Atlanta, GA; Flagship Scholars Resident Award, Louisiana Tiger Legacy Excellence Scholarship and President's Student Aid Program, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; President's Scholarship, Millsaps College, Jackson, MS; and the Wilkins Scholarship, Sewanee: The University of the South, Sewanee, TN.

Miss Sara Saak, a National Merit Finalist, will study biology at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL from which she received Presidential Merit, Presidential National Merit Housing, Supply Store Book Scholarships and Research/Study Abroad Stipend and UA Special Merit Stipend. She also received the Trust Your Crazy Idea Challenge Scholarship Award, Junior Achievement, New Orleans, LA; Flagship Scholars Resident Award and President's Student Aid Program, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; and the Distinguished Scholars Award, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA.

Miss Abby Samaha, a National Merit Commended student, will study biology at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL from which she received the Presidential Scholarship. She also received the Flagship Scholars Resident Award and President's Student Aid Program, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; Presidential Scholarship, Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, LA; Presidential Scholar, SHC Partnership and The 1830 Scholar Awards, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL; and the Shining the Spotlight on Seniors Scholarship, Total Choice Federal Credit Union, Hahnville, LA.

Miss Anna B. Trahan will major in aerospace engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Huntsville, AL from which she received the Charger Distinction Full Tuition Scholarship. She also received Half Tuition Panther Fund Scholarship, Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL; STEM+ and Heald Scholarships, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL; Academic Scholars Resident Award and President's Student Aid Program, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; University Scholarship, Mercer University, Macon, GA; Charger Distinction Full Tuition Scholarship, University of Alabama in Huntsville, Huntsville, AL; and the College of Engineering Freshmen Scholarship and Virginia Tech Academic Grant, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA.

Emma Broussard and Kaitlyn Freese received the Carmel Award, an award given to an outstanding graduate who is true and loyal to Mount Carmel Academy and who is compassionate, kind, involved, a good student, and one who gives of herself to help others.

Elizabeth Holzman and Grace Walser received the Carmel Cub Award. This award is presented to the graduate who displays leadership, spirit, and service through her participation in extra-curricular and school activities.

Lily Alley, Meghan Fontana, and Elizabeth White received the Unheralded Senior Award. This award is presented to a graduate of high moral character who promotes school activities, does behind-the-scenes jobs which often go unnoticed, and is always there when someone needs her.

Kaitlyn Freese received the Sister Camille Anne Campbell, O. Carm. Award, an award presented to a graduate who demonstrates some of Sister Camille Anne’s outstanding attributes -- her passion for learning, her strong communication skills, her leadership ability, and, especially, her spiritual depth and great love of God.

Caroline Bonin, Vicky Chen, Shelby Estess, Meghan Fontana, Chloe Marino, and Anna Nguyen received the Five-Year Perfect Attendance Award. 

Service awards, presented to graduates who have given outstanding service to the school, who have always done for others in a very special way, and have helped to make the years of high school better for all in the Mount Carmel community, were presented to Jordan Berry, Sophie Brady, Adeline Chappuis, Caroline Gillen, Juliana Gomez, Sophia Happoldt, Taylor Landry, Gianna Margin, Anna Nguyen, Teressa Nicosia, Meredith Noonan, Michaela Olsen, Sofia Plaia, Katherine Reynolds, Sara Saak, Abby Samaha, Rebekah Schexnayder, and Ciana Williams.
