Art II students created their own limited edition art prints by block printing. Thinking about autumn or winter, students illustrated an element of the season – many chose Halloween – and used an entirely new set of artmaking tools to create their artwork. During a printmaking unit, they studied the linoleum/rubber cutting printing method. Then, with a block of rubber as their base, they carved out their drawing. They created their first print using brayers to roll on their ink and barrens to help transfer the ink to the paper. This type of printmaking can be a single color, but Ms. Gillane challenged her students to complete a three-color reduction. They carved more out of their rubber block each time for their second and third round of printing.
