Mount Carmel Academy's entire senior class recently visited the Touro Synagogue as part of their study of the religions of the world, specifically their unit on Judaism. The students were met by Mrs. Adrien Genet who proceeded to tell them about the synagogue and a little of the history of Judaism in New Orleans. The students were then allowed to see inside the ark to where the scrolls of the Torah are kept. Each student was given the opportunity to go up to the bimah (Jewish altar) and see the Hebrew writing on the scrolls. The students also learned about the differences between Jewish Shabbat and Catholic Mass, the divisions within Judaism, and the origin of the Jewish holy days and how they are still celebrated.
