On September 12, 2023, the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation awarded Mount Carmel Academy a check for $6,737.00 to support their volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. This commendation occurred during the annual service learning event at Xavier University. The STEM Library Lab, in collaboration with the Brown Foundation, organized this back-to-school and service kick-off gathering, which acknowledged numerous K-12 schools from Louisiana and Mississippi for their commitment to service learning.
Sophomore Adelaide Friel was recognized for being chosen as the Foundation's art contest winner. Her artwork was featured on t-shirts and tote bags distributed to all attendees. Mr. Reggie Rachuba, her art teacher, was also honored during the event. In addition, Mount Carmel received a $500 principal's award to further promote and support service learning initiatives.
