As the Volley Cubs warmed up, WMCA students set up cameras, discussed shots and the best angles, tested out microphones, and checked their live stream connections in preparation for their first live broadcast through VSN Louisiana on September 16, 2021. As the volleyball team defeated Northshore, WMCA had a win of their own. They successfully aired their first live sporting event. The culture at MCA is embedded with a spirit of collaboration, and this effort was no exception. WMCA alumna Abby Alonzo ’18 was back on campus to lend a hand. Abby, whose experience includes LSU Tiger TV Sports Reporter, New Orleans Saints Press Box Personnel, VSN Reporter & Color Analyst, and Co-Host of the GritIron Show, served as the commentator. She will be working with WMCA students who are interested in taking over as play-by-play announcers or color commentators.

Despite their inaugural success, WMCA has little time to celebrate. In addition to producing and broadcasting weekly newscasts across campus, their schedules are now full of athletic events. This year they will also live stream basketball, soccer, and softball home games.

Watch them in action on September 22 as the Volley Cubs take on Hannan (and September 23 vs. Cabrini) with JV beginning at 4:30 p.m. and varsity following at 5:30 p.m. Viewing the games requires a subscription, with a portion of your subscription benefitting MCA. Games will also be available on-demand at any time. For away games, if MCA’s opponent has a contract with VSN, subscribers will be able to view those games as well.
