World Geography students recently visited the Lighthouse on Lakeshore Drive for a hands-on learning experience from the Pontchartrain Conservancy. They rotated through four interactive stations, exploring how green and gray infrastructure combats storm surge, learning about the role and significance of river deltas, discovering how wetlands filter sediment and runoff, and touring the Lighthouse Museum. These immersive activities gave students valuable insights into coastal perseverance and emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship.

Stations:

Multiple Layers of Defense
Students explored the impact of storm surge on coastal areas and strategies for protection. They participated in a budget-based activity, building communities and choosing different layers of defense to protect their towns from storm surge, while dumped marbles simulated the force of a hurricane.

Water Filtration and the Wetlands
In a water filtration challenge, students experienced how wetlands naturally filter and purify water, demonstrating the critical role wetlands play in maintaining water quality.

River Deltas
Using sandboxes, students constructed different types of river deltas, including the Nile's arcuate delta, the Hudson's estuarine delta, and the Mississippi's bird's-foot delta, to understand their formation and significance.

Lighthouse Museum Tour
Students learned about the history of the Lighthouse and the origins of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, gaining insights into the region's heritage and environmental conservation efforts.
