At the Lighthouse on Lakeshore Drive, World Geography students took part in hands-on activities with the Pontchartrain Conservancy — designing storm-surge defenses, testing wetland filtration, modeling river deltas, and touring the historic Lighthouse Museum. Each station deepened their understanding of South Louisiana’s unique landscape and environmental challenges.

Multiple Layers of Defense
Students examined how storm surge impacts coastal communities and the strategies used to protect them. Working within a set “budget,” they designed their own towns and selected layers of defense before testing their creations, using dropped marbles to simulate hurricane-force conditions.

Water Filtration and the Wetlands
In a hands-on filtration challenge, students observed how wetlands naturally clean and purify water, demonstrating their essential role in maintaining water quality.

River Deltas
Using sandboxes, students built three types of river deltas to learn how each is formed and why deltas are so significant to the regions they shape.

Lighthouse Museum Tour
During a guided tour, students explored the history of the Lighthouse and the origins of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, gaining a deeper appreciation for the region’s environmental heritage and ongoing conservation efforts.
