Civics classes recently participated in Socratic seminars on the allegorical novel "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. After learning about different forms of government, students read the satirical fable about an oppressed society of overworked, mistreated animals who take the farm over from humans, only to find themselves in a new tyranny.
In the seminar, the students sat in a circle and began a student-led discussion of the book. They posed questions, deliberated various topics, and engaged in dialogue for most of the class period. Class members chose a partner to help keep track of the times they spoke and to help guide them in the seminar.
