There is no looking back for Mount Carmel’s volleyball team—only steps forward. Currently, the team is 19-3 in the regular season and 2-1 in district competition. In addition, the team won both the Ursuline tournament and the St. Joseph’s Academy tournament.

Eight seniors graduated last year and the team only has three returning starters. “Obviously they’re big foot steps to fill,” says team captain Collette Tilly. “But I think we are all working really hard. We all know what it feels like to win state, so we really want to do it again.”

Head coach April Hagadone realizes that every opponent brings their “A game” when Mount Carmel is in the gym. “Being state champions [means] there is a big target on [the team],” she says.

Just [because we’re] Mount Carmel, everyone wants to beat us,” adds Tilly, who brushes off talk that the Cubs are in a rebuilding year. “A lot of people don’t realize how strong we are, so maybe it will come as a surprise.”

The team is looking at their three losses so far as learning experiences; they are watching film, looking for ways to improve against perennial state contenders like Fontainebleau and Dominican. “Fontainebleau is always good in September,” says Hagadone. “We just need to be better in November.”

Though the team is young, Hagadone says “The more we play, the better we get.” Currently, Marlee Bean leads the teams in both aces and assists, Angele Maumus leads in digs, Jade Sorrell in kills, and Megan LaSalle in blocks.

Like most members of the team’s fan base, the Carmel Army, Junior Colleen Cecola is most excited for the upcoming “pink games,” which raise money to support breast cancer research. “It feels great,” sh says, “to see everyone come out to support both the team and the cause.”

Tilly is also excited for the pink games: “It’s Chapelle and Dominican. Those are our two biggest rivalries.”

The team plays its home pink game against Chapelle on October 18th at Mount Carmel. The junior varsity team plays at 4:15 and the varsity team will follow.
