Mount Carmel students help rebuild New Orleans
Youth Rebuilding New Orleans (YRNO) buys houses destroyed by Katrina and rebuilds them. Currently they are rebuilding about three or four houses. YRNO works solely off of volunteer work—mainly high school and college students. The management of YRNO is run by recently graduated college students. This gives them an opportunity to discover what it is like to run a small business and handle money.
Early Saturday, October 8, a small group of Mount Carmel students gathered and helped rebuild New Orleans. YRNO asked for help and the students of Mount Carmel Academy responded. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the enthusiasm of the girls was amazing. The girls devoted six hours of their Saturday morning to refurbishing a house. Some corked and painted the siding while others installed shelving. Some scraped paint off the stained glass windows and the rest spruced up the gardens, cut the grass and cleaned up the back yard. It was a great experience for all.
